Thank you for taking the time to complete a library feedback card and apologies for the delay in my reply.

Over the last few years we have steadily increased opening hours at most library sites both during semester and vacation. The one exception to this has been the recent reduction in opening hours at Martyrs during the January inter-semester break. Thank you for noting that our staff do need vacation time – we also have fewer staff working between semesters as some are contracted to work during term-time only.

However the biggest factor in making this decision was uptake: weekdays in January 2016 the Thomson Reading Room at Martyrs typically had five to seven users while in January 2015 weekends had often seen just three or four. Even in the Main Library, which remained open at weekends during inter-semester break this year, there were often only 40-100 users in the building. This low use takes the pressure off space meaning there should be study accommodation [in the Main Library] to suit all tastes. In closing Martyrs when there are very few users we also reduce the cost of heating and lighting at what is often the coldest time of year.

Please note that this reduction applied to the January inter-semester break only. During spring and summer vacation we plan to open the Thomson Reading Room as last year (Mon-Fri: 0800-2100; Sat & Sun: 1000-1800).
