Thank you for taking the time to complete a Library feedback card.
Over the last five years we have steadily increased opening hours across our Libraries. You don’t have to go back too far to a time when the Main Library was not open at all on Sundays during vacation, for example. However we have to strike a balance between staff resource/operational costs and user demand. The reason we took the decision to close the Thomson Reading Room in the Richardson Research Library at Marytrs Kirk over weekends this summer was because there was very little uptake last summer (there was often just one or two students in the building).
The Main Library vacation opening hours have been set at 0800-2200 (weekdays) and 1000-1900 (weekends) for the last couple of years. We regularly meet with the Students’ Association Sabbatical Officers and the Student Library User Group and we have not been approached about extending these hours, nor have there been requests to extend opening from individual students (prior to yours). We always carefully evaluate all feedback but at this point we have no plans to alter our vacation opening hours.
I do apologise for the five weekdays of early closure from the 18th-22nd July (2000 instead of 2200). This was due to a shortage of staff because of illness. Fortunately such instances of unscheduled early closure are very rare.
Please do not hesitate to get back to me if I can be of any further assistance.
