Thanks for your feedback. For the last few Orientation Weeks, we've moved these sofas out of the way to create space for tours. This year, however, we've decided to keep them away from the main concourse for the time being. Most of the sofas are actually still on Level 2 (on the other side of where the blue soft seating is) but some had to be removed because they were damaged.
We have found in the last couple of years that this area has become increasingly congested and noisy. Whilst we are comfortable with the more relaxed environment on Level 2, it has become more and more difficult for our service desk staff to even have a conversation with students (either face to face or on the phone) because of noise coming from the concourse area. Were the space wider this might not be a problem but it is a relatively narrow concourse for such a high volume of traffic.
We plan to keep the arrangement as it is for the time being but will of course take into account any further feedback that we receive from students and other users.
