Thanks for your You Said We Did comments card yesterday.  I’m really pleased you found the extended hours at St Mary’s last semester useful.

As you know, we ran these extra hours (opening until 19:45 Monday to Friday and opening at weekends just before Christmas) on a trial basis.  We staffed the evening hours by deploying existing staff from the Main Library to cover St Mary’s, so there was no additional staff cost. 

What we discovered however during the trial was that reducing our service desk team down to 2 people in the Main Library stretched the team a bit too thinly, particularly between 5 and 6pm.  In order to continue with the extended hours, we would therefore need to pay for additional staff cover and this is not something that we currently have the budget for so the evening opening will not be offered this semester.

I am hopeful that we will be able to provide some weekend opening hours around the exam period.  I also intend to put the projected staffing costs into the Library’s unit planning paperwork later this semester.  This is basically our advance bid to the University for budget for the 2018/19 financial year.  We aim to ask for a sufficient increase in our staffing budget to allow us to offer evening hours at St Mary’s from September this year, hopefully making it a permanent arrangement.  Our case for this additional investment is strengthened by the figures we saw in the trial and feedback such as your own, so thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.
