Thanks for completing a Library feedback card last week.

As you have rightly pointed out, study space is very pressured in the Main Library.  We would love to have more space but in the absence of a physically extended building, the best we can do is repurpose existing space, just as we did during the redevelopment of 2011/12.

The University does plan to develop Level 1 (the basement level) of this building to create another 375 spaces but we can’t do this until our store collections and staff accommodation currently occupying this space are relocated to Eden Campus.  That won’t happen until late 2019/early 2020 and therefore no additional substantial Main Library study space will be available until late 2020.

In the meantime, we are hoping to add some more silent study spaces this summer by reducing some of our collections shelving.  This will however only produce around another 50 seats so the impact will be relatively minimal.

I’m sorry this isn’t a more positive response but there is a limited amount that we as Library staff can do.

Best wishes
