I quite agree - we do need more toilets in the library, all of varieties. However, there is very little that we are able to do about this at the present time.
In 2020 when the next phase of redevelopment is carried out, most of the improvements will be seen on Level 1 (the basement) where around 350 new study spaces will be installed. New gender neutral toilets will be included on this floor. We can't carry out the work on Level 1 until we relocate existing staff accommodation and our general collections store (which is roughly 50% of our general stock) to the new Eden Campus which will not be ready until late 2019.
The three upper floors of the Main Library will see extensions to and refurbishments of their respective existing toilet blocks. We have specifically asked for additional male cubicles as well as further expansion of the female toilets. Doing this work will involve the reduction of study seating in these areas but this will be offset by the new provision on Level 1. We will also be doubling the size of the cafe which will contain toilets for the first time.
I'm afraid, as I said, there's little we can do about provision until 2020 and this is one of the challenges we face in trying to provide facilities within a building that has not and is not increasing in physical size.
