Currently the courtesy reminder notices are sent out 5 days (for normal loans) and 2 days (for seven day loans) before the book is due. At that time you can renew an item if you still want to use it (unless recalled by another user). The problem with what you are suggesting is that a significant number of Library users live outside of St Andrews and/or are regularly away from St Andrews – particularly over the summer. The advance notice allows them to post books back to us or make other arrangements for the return of items on loan.
We don’t really want to clog up mail boxes with courtesy notices more than we already do – we are keen to stress to all members that these notices are just that and a close eye should be kept on your online library account.
