Thanks for your comments. Our fine rates, whilst not having been reviewed for some time, are pretty much in keeping with those seen at other university libraries. Whilst there may be merit in increasing them as a way of encouraging more of our users to return books on time, I'm not sure that increasing them for the reason you put forward is the right approach.
You are correct to say that we don't take payments of less than £1. This is because since 2013, the Library has operated on a cashless basis and the minimum card payment we can receive is £1. It used to be £5 but has been gradually reduced over the last couple of years as we moved towards a cashless policy.
Whilst I appreciate you may be uncomfortable with having any debt to the Library, you shouldn't worry too much about such small amounts as we will not ultimately pursue you for them.
We could consider the minimum fine being increased to £1 but I don't think the majority of our users would be happy with this.
