Thanks for completing a Library You Said/We Did card last month – my apologies for the delay in sending you this response.
There are various reasons as to why the barcodes are placed where they are, mostly for technical reasons. I agree that it’s aesthetically unpleasing and makes it difficult (or impossible) to read the title from the front cover. When our self-service system was introduced, we were advised that this position on the front of books was the optimal location for the most efficient scanning of the barcode. As such, a template was produced and this is used on all of our stock, irrespective of where the title has been printed.
My colleagues in our Systems and Resources Division advise me that they are looking into a possible change of system that would result in barcodes being place in a far less obtrusive location.
