Thanks for your feedback about Martyrs. Before we opened this new facility, we did hold a focus group session with a number of PGR students who were very firmly of the view that we should not permit coffee and food in the reading room. Their preference was only to allow bottled water providing there was a space near the reading room that food and hot drinks could be consumed.
Admittedly the focus group session was before any students had actually had the experience of using the new reading room and we have had a few suggestions recently asking for the same thing as you.
However, our view is that it would be inapprorpiate to allow coffee or soft drinks in this space. The proximity of the foyer - where you can eat or drink coffee - is such that it's really not very far to go in order to take a break.
I appreciate that it would be nice to sit at a study desk with a warm latte or cool can of coke but we do have problems with drinks spilling in the Main Library. The cost of cleaning and/or replacing furnishings in Martyrs damaged by similar spills would be significant.
Therefore we have no plans at this point in time to change the current policy.
Thanks again for your comments.
