Thanks for your kind words and positive feedback about Martyrs. We have had a few recent requests to change the current policy on food and drink in the reading room but have no plans to do so just now.
During the planning of the Martyrs project, senior staff of the Library met with a focus group of PGR students and asked specifically about whether or not they felt coffee should be allowed. Their strong preference was to restrict coffee to the foyer area and this will continue to be the Library’s policy for the time being.
If hot drinks (or food) were allowed in the main Research Reading Room, the cost of repairing damage caused by spills would be significant. Whilst we appreciate the strength of feeling on this issue, we do believe that by at least allowing food and drink in the foyer we have made some kind of accommodation for users. We could of course have decided to exclude all food and drink from the building in its entirety but feel that we've found a reasonable balance by allowing it in the foyer.
We will keep the situation under review but thanks again for your feedback.
