Thanks for your recent comments.
I did meet with colleagues in Estates at the start of this year to talk about the bike storage at the Main Library. We had received a number of comments from students asking if the facility could be extended considering the greater numbers of users visiting the Library building in recent years. You may be aware that Estates have added a number of additional bike spaces at the side of the Library so this should help to alleviate the pressure on space.
In terms of abandoned bikes, Estates staff do monitor bike sheds regularly and have a standard set of procedures to follow in the event that a bike appears to be without a good home to go to!
There is more information at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/media/estates/documents/Cycle%20Parking%20Regs%20procedure%20%20-%20Web%20Feb10.pdf and I would encourage you to report any specific instances of bikes that you think may have been abandoned.
Hope this helps but please get back to me if you’ve any more comments.
