Thank you for taking the time to complete a Library Comments card, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
I’m sorry that you’ve come across other people’s chewed gum stuck under the computer desks. I agree, it is quite disgusting. The Library cleaners look out for this when they clean the desks, but obviously it would be much better if people would dispose of their gum using the bins which are provided in the Library….
Unfortunately implementing a “no chewing gum” policy would be, as you pointed out, very difficult to enforce. I’m not sure I’d like to ask someone to show me that what they were chewing wasn’t gum, that too would be pretty disgusting! We’d also like to ensure we don’t punish the vast majority of responsible gum users who dispose of their unwanted gum in the bins. Instead we will continue to endeavour to clean up any “misplaced” chewing gum and hope that like the majority of library users, those gum chewers who have disposed of their gum in a less than responsible way, will see the error of their ways and take on board the views of their fellow library users.
If you do come across any offensively located gum, please bring it to the attention of the Library staff on duty at either the Welcome Desk or the Library Helpdesk and we’ll ensure the cleaners are made aware of any specific issues.
