I quite agree – we do need more seats during the exam period but I’m afraid we really don’t have anywhere to put them given how limited the space in the Library is. We do of course extend our opening hours in the Main Library (and at the JF Allen Library in the North Haugh) during the revision period but can’t actually put additional seats in.
One thing that probably would help is to address the problem of seat hogging – i.e. users who come to the library, leave their belongings at a desk and then go out for hours on end. I had a complaint from a student the other day about a study desk that she saw unoccupied – but “hogged” – for more than 6 hours and this is clearly unacceptable.
We therefore intend to introduce some kind of policy on this issue for the start of the new session in September. That way at least students will be able to make the most of the study seats that we do have.
