Thanks for your feedback. I agree that the smoking outside the Library entrance is unpleasant for those not doing the smoking and it's something we've been trying to deal with for many years.
The previous entrance to the Library on the south elevation of the building didn't provide a designated smoking area near it. As a result, smokers tended to spread out around the front of the building across a wider area. Since we provided a designated smoking area near the entrance, the issue tends to be more contained but it clearly still spreads out during busy times.
The University is considering the introduction of a perimeter smoking ban at buildings and, having discussed the matter with the Director of Estates recently, we are considering how to improve things at the Library. This will still involve the provisino of a designated smoking area but it would be further away from the entrance.
