Thanks for recently completing one of our You Said We Did feedback cards in the Library. 

I share your deep sense of frustration with the issue of other people highlighting books or writing in them with pen and pencil.  It is a very problematic issue but of course it’s normally very difficult to pinpoint who the culprits are. 

Where we have been confident of who is to blame, the individuals concerned are contacted and appropriately reprimanded.  This can involve proportionate disciplinary action (which can be included in academic transcripts) including financial penalties.  It has been an interesting exercise in terms of the reactions of users to whom we have sent these reprimands.  I should add that those found to be highlighting or writing in books have not been exclusively students. 

Most have been completely unaware that writing in books was unacceptable practice and regarded by us as damage to University property.  Others have shown less concern (or remorse!) which illustrates that we have some way to go to raising awareness.
