Thank you for your recent suggestions on one of our You Said We Did comments cards. My apologies for the delay in you receiving this response – I was on annual leave recently and have been catching up with things more slowly than usual!
I’m not at all surprised at your suggestion as it’s something we did wonder about last year when the Kirk was being opened as a Library facility. However there were no plans in the original project to develop this space and as yet there still aren’t nor is there a budget to facilitate this.
I do like the idea of an outside space but we would need to be confident that issues related to security could be adequately addressed. I would have a concern about the area being used for smoking unless we could ensure there wouldn’t be any impact on people inside the building. We have been talking to University Estates about the provision of a designated smoking area for Martyrs but this would be away from the front entrance.
However, I’ll discuss the matter with the rest of the Library’s senior management team and we’ll take a decision at that point if it’s something we wish to investigate further.
