Thank you for taking the time to complete a “You said, We did” card recently asking that the opening times of Martyrs Reading Room be consistent throughout the year.  The reduced opening hours at Martyrs over the vacation period ties-in with the reduced opening hours of the Main Library, as the staff who work in the Main Library have a responsibility for overseeing the safe operation of Martyrs.  We are only able to open Martyrs when we have staff contracted to work within the Library service as a whole, this is to ensure that should there be any form of emergency, including fire, disturbance, accident or illness, that an appropriately trained member of staff can deal with the incident.  Whilst libraries are generally very safe environments, we deal with a surprising number of such incidents in the course of providing services, and wouldn’t be able to open any of our facilities without a member of staff on hand.

We continue to review our opening times at both the Main Library and Martyrs, and will take your comments into consideration.

Thanks again for getting in touch,
