Thank you for completing a "You said, We did" card recently, asking us to consider allowing hot drinks in the Research Reading Room in Martyrs.
When we were designing the Research Reading Room we consulted with a focus group of Research Student and Staff to determine what future users of the facility wanted. We asked specifically about whether hot drinks should be allowed within the Reading Room and the overwhelming view was that they should not be allowed.
With that in mind we created what we hope is a suitable environment for the Research community, with high quality fixtures and fittings. We allow bottled water in order to ensure people can stay hydrated, knowing that should there be any spills the damage caused would be minimal. We have unfortunately seen the damage which has been done in the Main Library by accidental spills of hot drinks, to carpets, desks and chairs, as well as book, and we would like to ensure the same thing doesn't happen at Martyrs.
We do allow hot drinks and food in the foyer area at Martrys, which we see as a reasonable accommodation to allow for breaks, etc. without needing to leave the building.
As with all Library services, we will continue to investigate ways to better meet the needs of our users, so will keep your suggestion in mind.
