Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback on Martyrs Kirk.
We are often asked to extend the opening times of our libraries, including Martyrs Kirk, and over the years we have looked into doing this, and increased opening hours in response to demands. A few years ago we trialled 24-hour access in the Main Library following demand to do so, but our experience showed that whilst Library users express a desire to use facilities 24/7, the reality was somewhat different, with very low usage in the early hours of the morning. Admitted the trial was in the Main Library and not Martyrs.
It's often thought that because we have swipe access at Martyrs, that extended opening could be done at no extra cost. The Library is required to provide staffing to ensure the facility can be run in compliance with health and safety regulations, so staff need to be available to deal with any issues which might arise, such as breaches of security, illness, accidents, etc. Any increase in opening hours would therefore involve additional staffing cost.
There are some 24 hour study spaces available within the University, which are marked as on this map.
We continue to work with students to find ways to increase the opening times and the quality of all the library run facilities, so your feedback is very welcome. Any future changes in our opening times will be communicated widely with our users.
