Thanks you for completing a “You said, We did” comments card relating to the use of Martyrs Research Reading Room by Taught Post-graduate students, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding.

You are entirely correct that Taught Postgraduate students can use the Research Reading Room on a trial basis after 5pm Monday-Friday and at weekends.  The swipe access system will only allow Staff and Postgraduate Research Students access to the room before 5pm Monday to Friday, and we have carried out tests to ensure that this is the case.  We’re unsure how other users have been able to access the Reading Room out-with the times agreed, and would recommend that users of the Research Reading Room notify the Library if they believe unauthorised users are using the space – you can text details of the issue to 07740 421569 or you can email  at the time, and a member of Library staff will investigate.  This sort of reporting will allow us to ask unauthorised users how they gained access, but will also allow us to clarify with the users what access has been agreed under the trial.  It was agreed that access would be provided at the times specified as these were times when the Research Reading Room was least used, and we recognised that we needed to limit access to Research Students and Staff at times when the Research Reading Room was most heavily used.

A reminder email has been sent to all Taught Postgraduate students by the Proctor, reminding them of the terms and period of access, and we hope this will assist in ensuring it is clear what times Taught Postgraduate students can use the facility.  As access has been provided on a trial basis, we very much welcome feedback from users of the space and will use this in determining how, and to whom, access is provided in the future.

Thanks again for letting us know about this issue.
