Q. Can we have more designated talking spaces?

Thanks for your Library comments card at the weekend.

As you know, we currently split the Main Library into a 2:1 ratio of silent areas to talking areas (i.e. 2 floors are silent and one floor is louder) and we feel that this is the right balance given the constraints of the building’s size and layout.

There are plans to develop the lower ground floor (Level 1) so that an additional 375 study spaces are provided.  We anticipate that this floor will be one where talking is allowed but it will be quieter than Level 2.  This new area will also include provision for more group study tables and the ground floor will also see an expanded café facility, doubling it in size.

However this work is not due to start until mid-2020 and in the meantime, we have little room for manoeuvre.  If you would like to suggest where in the existing building we could provide more designated talking spaces, do please let me know.

Thanks again.
