This error message occurs when you have both the EndNote and Mendeley citation plugins installed in Microsoft Word.

In order to add citations from EndNote into your Word document remove the Mendeley plugin:

Close Microsoft Word
Open up Mendeley Reference Manager
Go to Tools > Uninstall Mendeley Cite for Word
Once this is done reopen Word and you should now be able to add citations from EndNote
