Try selecting the reference using the Control key and clicking on it.  Then choose 'Edit Reference' from the menu.  If the record doesn't open in the right hand panel then the reference may be opening in a separate window.  Try viewing all your windows to see if the reference has opened in a new window by clicking the Task view button near the bottom-left corner of the taskbar, or press Windows key+Tab on your keyboard.
