Q. Should I save my EndNote Library as a package?

This guidance is for Mac users only.

An Endnote library is made up of a library file (.enl) and a data folder (.data) and it will only work if both are saved to the same place on your computer.

When you first create a new EndNote library on a Mac it may ask you if you want to "save as package". This is the best option to choose as it will make sure .enl and .data files will stay connected.

Saving as a package will give your EndNote library a different file extension (.enlp) when you save it on to your Mac. To work with your library take the following steps:

  1. Go to Finder on your Mac
  2. Hold down the Control key or right click on the .enlp file and select "Show Package Contents"
  3. Drag and drop the .enl file and the .Data folder from the Finder window to a location of your choice.
  4. Open EndNote
  5. Choose File > Open Library
  6. Select the .enl file you extracted and click Open
