Q. How do I use Endnote to cite journal articles which don't have page numbers when creating Harvard Style references?

I have a journal article which doesn't have page numbers, but does have an article number, how do I add the article number in place of the page range without pp. appearing when using the Endnote style.  I'm creating Harvard references

Journal articles which are published in online journals often have an article number instead of a part/issue and page range.  The article number is used in place of the issue number and page range when referencing the article.

Using the Harvard reference style you would want an article reference in your bibliography to look like this example:

Deary, M.E. (2025) 'Shifting Shores: Carbon Storage and Habitat Resilience in a Major Scottish Saltmarsh', Estuaries and Coasts, 49: 25. https://doi.org/10.1007/s12237-025-01632-y

Where 49 is the volume number and 25 is the article number.

To ensure this is cited correctly using Endnote you would need to edit the reference in Endnote:

  1. In your Endnote library find the entry for the article you need to amend
  2. Choose the Edit tab:

An Endnote screen shot. Edit tab is selected, Volume field has 49: 25 entered, and the Issue and pages fields are blank. The save button is highlighted to save changes.

  1. In the volume field add a colon then the article number, e.g. 49: 25.  If the article also had a part number you would add this to the field, e.g. 49(2): 25
  2. Delete any information in the Issue or Pages field
  3. Click Save to keep your changes.

If you have already cited the article in a word document you will need to update the references:

  1. Select the endnote menu option in word
  2. Select Update Citations and Bibliography
