Q. Why is my EndNote Library no longer syncing?

EndNote requires users to update their password every 180 days for security purposes. You should receive a reminder e-mail to change your password in advance of it expiring.

To reset your password:

  1. Go to the Forgot Password page and follow the on screen instructions
  2. Once you have reset your password you will need to update EndNote Desktop on your device
    • On a Windows PC go to Edit > Preferences > Sync
    • On MacOS go to EndNote > Settings/Preferences > Sync
  3. Enter your new password in the login box
  4. Click OK or Save to resume syncing

Note: If you use the Web of Science database then changing your EndNote password will also change your Web of Science password. The next time you use Web of Science database login with your normal University credentials if prompted and then login to your Web of Science account with the e-mail address you registered with and the updated password you chose when resetting your EndNote account

If you don't update your EndNote password:

  • You will still be able to use EndNote Desktop but not the Sync & Share feature. We strongly recommend that you update your password when required so you can still backup your library via Sync function.
  • You will not be able to use EndNote Online. If you use the EndNote Online Addin in Word or Google Docs rather than the desktop Addin then this will also be impacted
  • If you use EndNote on a iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone then it will no longer update as it uses EndNote Online to do this
